Frequently asked questions about Digital Analytics

What is digital analytics?

Digital analytics (also known as web analytics) is a practice of repeated and systematic exploration of digital data, especially website data. Digital analytics is carried out to optimize the online performance of a business. Digital analysts are responsible for analysing and optimizing any online and offline footprints of a business, as long as they can be measured, classified or categorized and are used to optimize the online performance of a business. Here there is a strong emphasis on optimizing online performance. Data can also be used to optimize the offline performance of a business and to take a wide range of business decisions from operational, strategic to predictive. For that we use other business analytics technologies, such as supply-chain analytics, predictive analytics, stakeholder management, data mining etc. all of which are not digital analytics.

What is the difference between ‘Digital analytics’ and ‘Google Analytics’?

Digital analytics is about analyzing and interpreting data, setting up goals, strategies and KPIs. It’s about creating strategic roadmap for your business. Digital Analytics is the core skill. Google Analytics is just a tool used to implement ‘Digital Analytics’. You can also implement ‘Digital analytics’ via other tools like ‘adobe analytics’, ‘kissmetrics’ etc. You learn data analysis and interpretation from Digital analytics and not from Google Analytics. You learn to set up KPIs, strategies and measurement framework for your business from ‘Digital analytics’ and not from ‘Google Analytics’. So if you are taking a course on 'Google Analytics’, you are learning to use one of the tools of ‘Digital analytics’. You are not learning the ‘Digital analytics’ itself. Since any person can learn to use Google Analytics in couple of weeks, you do not get any competitive advantage in the marketplace just by knowing GA. You need to know a lot more than GA in order to work as a digital analyst or digital marketer.

What is the difference between Web Analytics and Digital Analytics?

The terms 'Web analytics' and 'digital analytics' are often used interchangeably. But they are not really the same thing. Web analytics refers to the analysis of website data. Digital Analytics is more of an umbrella term which not only include analysis of the website data but also include analysis of data from all other digital platforms (search, social media, email, display advertising etc).

What is the difference between Digital Analytics and Conversion Optimization?

Digital Analytics is the core discipline. Conversion optimization is one of the applications of Digital analytics. Digital Analytics is like grammar and words, and conversion optimization is the language based on that grammar. So if you try to speak conversion optimization without knowing the grammar, you are going to speak it all wrong. Digital analytics is about analyzing and interpreting data, setting up goals, strategies and KPIs. It’s about creating strategic roadmap for your business. It's about the maths and stats. If you are strong in Digital analytics but weak in conversion optimization, you can still do well. But if you are weak in Digital analytics, you are destined to fail in conversion optimization. Because you lack basic understanding of how data works, how number and ratio metrics work, how to analyze and interpret data. You won’t understand data sampling issues, you won’t understand statistical significance issues with ratio metrics like conversion rate. Then anything you do in conversion optimization is not based on maths and stats but the best practices borrowed from other optimizers.

What is the difference between Digital Analytics and Business Analytics?

Business analytics (also known as BA) is a practice of repeated and systematic exploration of business data. Business analytics is carried out to optimize the overall business performance from: operational, strategic to predictive. Business analytics (BA) is more of an umbrella term and is comprised of many technologies. One such technology is web/digital analytics. The other technologies which comes under business analytics are: Exploratory analytics, Data Engineering, Predictive analytics, Big data analytics, supply chain analytics, stakeholder management etc. All of these BA technologies are just the tip of a huge iceberg. It can take several years to master each business analytics technology. For example, predictive analytics in itself is a big industry and there are conferences organised just around this topic, like Predictive Analytics World.

What is the difference between Digital Analytics and Data science?

Data science (also known as data driven science) is a combination of: maths, statistics, programming, machine learning, data engineering and domain knowledge. Data science is used to extract knowledge (hindsight, insight, foresight) from structured and unstructured data sets (especially very large and complex data sets) in various forms. Data scientists are the people who work in the capacity of business analyst. Digital analytics is a practice of repeated and systematic exploration of digital data, especially website data. Digital analysts usually work on collecting, interpreting and reporting on website data. They may use maths and statistics for data interpretation and testing but usually they do not use maths and statistics as heavily as data scientists. Often a person who works in the capacity of digital analyst has nothing to do with big data or big data tools and technologies.
