How to Find Top Selling Product Categories in Google Analytics

Once you know your top selling location, you need to determine your top selling product categories in that location.

You may have got dozens or even hundreds of product categories on your website. But you won’t generate equal volume of sales from each and every product category.

There will always be some product categories which almost always outperform others.

Remember the 80/20 rule, 80% of your sales come from 20% of your product categories.

So you need to find your top product categories (in terms of sales) and work relentlessly on them to increase their sales further.

The rule of thumb is to sell what is selling and sell even more. There is no point working tirelessly on promoting a product category which generates little to no sales.

I am most likely to focus on, top 5 product categories (top in terms of sales). However I focus on top product categories only when I cannot find clear top 5 selling products.

These are the products which most likely generated 80% of the website total sales in the last 3 months.

Let us suppose your top selling location in the last three months was ‘Mountain View’. Now let us find top selling product categories in this location.

Step-1: Upload this custom report called ‘Product Analysis’ in your main Google Analytics view (if you haven’t already): https://analytics.google.com/analytics/web/template?uid=T9NIg6JpQouv-ds7RNJ9-Q

Step-2: Open the custom report.

Step-3: Make sure you set the date range of the report to the last three months.

Step-4: Navigate to the data table which list your top selling locations.

Step-5: Click on the name of your top selling location in the data table:

27 5

Step-6: Scroll up your report and then click on the ‘Product Analysis’ tab:

27 6

Step-7: Scroll down to the data table and then sort the table by the ‘revenue’ metrics:

27 7

Step-8: Take a note of the top 5 to 10 product categories in terms of sales.

That’s how you can find your top selling product categories in your top selling location.
