Introduction to goal sets and ‘goal slot IDs’ in Google Analytics

In Google Analytics, you can create up to 20 Goals per reporting view.

These 20 goals are grouped into 4 sets called the goal sets.

So there are four goals sets per reporting view.

Goals sets are specifically created to categorize different types of goals for your website.

So for example, you can group all your macro conversions in one goal set and all of your micro conversions in another goal set.

You can see these four goal sets in the ‘Explore’ tab of various GA reports:

Each goal set can have up to 5 individual goals

Introduction to Goal Slot ID

Every goal that you create in Google Analytics is assigned a numeric ID called the ‘goal slot ID’.

The first goal in the first goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 1 / Goal Set 1

The second goal in the first goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 2 / Goal Set 1

The third goal in the first goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 3 / Goal Set 1

The fourth goal in the first goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 4 / Goal Set 1

The fifth goal in the first goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 5 / Goal Set 1

Similarly, the sixth goal in the second goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 6 / Goal Set 2

The seventh goal in the second goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 7 / Goal Set 2

The 20th goal in the fourth goal set is assigned the following goal slot ID: Goal Id 20 / Goal Set 4
