Introduction to Folders in Google Tag Manager
In Google Tag Manager, through folders, you can organize tags, triggers, and variables by project name, team name, etc.
For example, you can group all of the tags, triggers and variables related to ‘video tracking‘ by creating a folder called ‘video tracking’ and then adding all of the related tags, triggers, and variables to it.
Step-1: Login to your GTM account and then click on the ‘Folders’ link:
Step-2: Click on the ‘New Folder’ button:
Step-3: Give a name to your new folder say ‘YouTube Video Tracking‘:
Step-4: Add the tags, triggers, and variables to this folder from ‘Unfiled items‘ by clicking on the checkbox next to them:
Step-5: Click on the ‘Move’ drop-down menu:
Step-6: Click on ‘YouTube Video Tracking’ from the drop-down menu:
You should now be able to see all the selected tags, triggers, and variables moved to the ‘YouTube Video Tracking’ folder:
How to add a new tag, trigger or variable to a folder?
Step-1: Click on the three dots next to your folder name:
You will now see a drop-down menu like the one below:
Step-2: Click on the ‘Add New Tag’ option to add a new tag to your folder.
Step-3: Click on the ‘Add New Trigger’ option to add a new trigger to your folder.
Step-4: Click on the ‘Add New Variable’ option to add a new variable to your folder.
How to rename or delete a folder?
Step-1: Click on the three dots next to your folder name:
You will now see a drop-down menu like the one below:
Step-2: Click on the ‘Rename Folder’ option to rename your folder.
Step-3: Click on the ‘Delete Folder’ option to delete your folder.
Note: Deleting a folder won’t automatically delete all the tags, triggers and variables in the folder.
How to change the folder of a tag, trigger or variable?
Step-1: Edit the tag/trigger/variable whose folder you want to change and then click on the ‘Folder’ icon:
Step-2: Select a different folder from the drop-down menu:
Step-3: Click on the ‘Save’ button:
